Defense technology startup Mach Industries has secured an additional $600 million in a Series C extension round, effectively doubling its valuation to $3.7 billion. The company announced this on Thursday, just three months after its original Series C raise of $300 million valued it at $1.8 billion in June.
What Mach Industries Does in Defense Tech
Mach Industries manufactures a variety of unmanned military vehicles and weapons. Its product lineup includes vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drones, systems designed for long-range strikes, and counter-drone systems. The company operates a 115,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at its Huntington Beach, California headquarters, with additional sites across the state. Mach aims to build highly integrated systems that cost less than those offered by traditional defense contractors.
Key Acquisitions and Market Impact for Aerospace Defense
A major factor in Mach’s rapid growth is its May acquisition of solid rocket motor (SRM) startup Exquadrum. This $50 million cash-and-equity deal was won over at least eight other potential buyers. The rise of drones has created a significant shortage of SRMs, a market largely controlled by two established companies. Exquadrum provided Mach with an answer to this bottleneck. The acquisition has since formed the basis of a new business line, Mach Energetics, which produces SRMs, jet engines, and energetic systems for other clients, impacting the broader aerospace defense sector.
Who is Backing This Rapid Growth in Defense Technology?
Investors in both the original and extension Series C tranches include Ribbit Capital, Infinite Capital, Bedrock Capital, and Sequoia. Mach Industries is founded and run by 22-year-old Ethan Thornton, who left MIT at age 19 to start the company. Early investors included Sequoia’s Stephanie Zhan and Shaun Maguire, marking Sequoia’s first venture into defense technology. Ribbit Capital, known for fintech and more recently for high-profile AI deals like Cognition and Crusoe, also joined the investor group. The company secured a U.S. Army contract earlier this year, further attracting investor attention and highlighting potential defense technology jobs.
